Lattice Vibrations – Phonons in Solid State

چکیده
Phonons are quanta of lattice vibrations. They play an important role in various phenomena seen in solid state. The physics of phonons and phenomena associated with them are explored.

Theory of crystal-field interactions in solid hydrogen. I. Single ortho impurities in solid parahydrogent
The theory of the crystal-field splitting, V,, of the J = I level of an ortho impurity in a parahydl-ogen matrix, due to the coupling of the rotational motion of the ortho molecule to the lattice vibrations, is developed taking due account of the quantum-crystal nature of the solid. Two contl-ibutions to V, are identified, both arising from the anisotropy in the lattice vibrations. One contribu...
متن کاملActivation of coherent lattice phonon following ultrafast molecular spin-state photo-switching: A molecule-to-lattice energy transfer
We combine ultrafast optical spectroscopy with femtosecond X-ray absorption to study the photo-switching dynamics of the [Fe(PM-AzA)2(NCS)2] spin-crossover molecular solid. The light-induced excited spin-state trapping process switches the molecules from low spin to high spin (HS) states on the sub-picosecond timescale. The change of the electronic state (<50 fs) induces a structural reorganiza...

where m is the mass of the particle and γ is the friction constant, (t) is the random force with zero mean and a nonzero variance. As an example let us mention a generalized Langevin equation describing dynamics of atoms interacting with thermal vibrations of the crystal lattice derived in Ref. [2]. Both the friction and the random force are very crude phenomenological substitutes of the real c...
متن کاملTheory of Photoinduced Phase Transitions in Molecular Conductors: Interplay Between Correlated Electrons, Lattice Phonons and Molecular Vibrations
Dynamics of photoinduced phase transitions in molecular conductors are reviewed from the perspective of interplay between correlated electrons and phonons. (1) The charge-transfer complex TTF-CA shows a transition from a neutral paraelectric phase to an ionic ferroelectric phase. Lattice phonons promote this photoinduced transition by preparing short-range lattice dimerization as a precursor. M...
متن کاملVIEWPOINT Atoms Oscillate Collectively in Large
O ptical lattices are key elements in the effort to use ultracold atoms for quantum simulation, quantum computing, and atomic clocks. These lattices rely on light forces to precisely hold atoms in space and to individually control their internal states [1]. Researchers strive for nearly perfect periodic lattice structures using state-of-the-art laser systems, but the atoms can interfere with th...
